Not by Boast nor Loud Confession
Verse 1
Not by boast nor loud confession,
Not by banners lifted high,
But by love in meek procession,
Shall the Cross be magnified.
Christ who stooped to wash the weary,
Christ who touched the leper’s hand,
Calls His church from pride and fury,
To the lowly way He planned.
Verse 2
Every tongue proclaims its duty,
Every tribe declares its cause,
But the Lamb in wounded beauty
Bore our sin without applause.
Not with shouts of self-defending,
Not with swords that kingdoms wield,
But with mercy never-ending,
Christ has triumphed, love revealed.
Verse 3
Let the world no longer wonder
At a faith that speaks, not lives;
Let our pride be torn asunder,
Let us love as He forgives.
Neighbors, strangers, foes, and brothers,
See the gospel in our care;
For the Christ who loves the others
Bids us take their burdens there.
Verse 4
So we lay our boasting silent,
So we turn from empty fame;
At the Cross, both meek and violent
Find redemption in His name.
May our lives, O Lord, bear witness,
May our hands the gospel show,
Till the nations see Christ with us,
And His love through us they know.
(Repeat Verse 2)
